Roof Waterproofing Systems: Which Is Best for Your Flat Roof?

Flat Roofing Guys

There are many roof waterproofing systems available. Here's how they compare on durability, cost, and suitability.

Choosing the right waterproofing system is the most important decision in any flat roofing project. Each system has different characteristics in terms of durability, installation requirements, repairability, and cost. Here's a practical comparison.

Mineral Felt

Traditional 3-layer mineral felt remains the cheapest flat roofing system. Lifespan: 10–15 years. It's vulnerable to UV degradation and blistering, and its lap joints are a consistent weak point. Only recommended where budget is the absolute primary constraint.

GRP Fibreglass

GRP is seamless and extremely durable. Excellent for domestic applications up to approximately 100m². Lifespan: 25–30+ years. Requires a competent installer as quality is very process-dependent. Repairs must use compatible GRP products.

EPDM Rubber

EPDM is flexible, UV-stable, and available in very large sheets. Excellent for both domestic and commercial applications. Lifespan: 30–50 years. Joins are bonded rather than welded — quality depends on correct adhesive technique.

Liquid Waterproofing

Cold-applied liquid membranes (polyurethane, PMMA) are excellent for complex roofs and refurbishments. They're seamless and adhere to most substrates. Increasingly popular for roof terraces and complex commercial roofs. Lifespan: 20–25 years depending on system.

Our Recommendation

For most domestic roofs, GRP fibreglass gives the best combination of longevity, appearance, and value. For larger roofs or roofs with complex shapes, EPDM or liquid applied systems may be more appropriate. We survey each project and recommend the most suitable system.
