What is EPDM Rubber Roofing?

Flat Roofing Guys

12 May 2026

EPDM is one of the most durable flat roof membranes available. Here's everything you need to know about this popular roofing system.

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a synthetic rubber membrane widely used for flat roofing. It has been used in commercial construction for over 50 years and is increasingly popular for domestic flat roofs across the UK.

Why Choose EPDM?

  • Exceptional durability — lifespan of 30–50 years
  • Highly flexible — accommodates building movement and complex roof shapes
  • UV-resistant — doesn't degrade from sun exposure
  • Excellent temperature resistance — performs from -45°C to +150°C
  • Low maintenance — minimal ongoing attention required
  • Eco-friendly — made from recycled materials and recyclable at end of life

How is EPDM Installed?

EPDM is supplied in large rolls, allowing most roofs to be covered with a single sheet — minimising joins and potential leak points. The membrane is secured to the roof deck using adhesive and mechanical fixings, then sealed at edges and details with specialist tape and adhesive.

EPDM Maintenance

EPDM requires very little maintenance. An annual inspection and occasional cleaning with a mild detergent is usually all that's needed. Minor damage can be repaired with EPDM patch repair kits. The membrane is resistant to moss and algae growth.

Is EPDM Right for Your Roof?

EPDM is an excellent choice for most domestic and commercial flat roofs. It performs particularly well on larger roofs, roofs with complex shapes, and situations where long-term durability and low maintenance are priorities. Contact us to discuss whether EPDM is the right system for your project.
