Storms can cause significant damage to flat roofs that isn't always immediately visible. Know what to look for after severe weather.
After a severe storm, it's important to check your flat roof for damage — even if you can't see any obvious problems from the ground. Storm damage that goes undetected can lead to leaks and structural damage.
External Signs to Look For
- Lifted or displaced flashing around edges, walls, or penetrations
- Ponding water caused by debris blocking drains
- Visible tears, splits, or punctures in the membrane
- Damage to roof edge trims, fascias, or gutters
- Displaced gravel or ballast on ballasted systems
Internal Signs
- New water stains on ceilings below the roof
- Damp patches on walls adjacent to the roof
- Mould appearing in rooms below the roof
- Dripping or running water during or after rain
What to Do After Storm Damage
If you suspect storm damage, photograph everything and contact your insurer promptly. Most home insurance policies cover sudden storm damage — but you'll need evidence. Don't attempt roof access yourself unless it's absolutely safe to do so.
Temporary Protection
If a roofer cannot attend immediately, heavy-duty tarpaulins can provide temporary protection. These should be securely fixed — a loose tarp in wind can cause additional damage.
We offer rapid-response emergency repairs for storm damage. Call us immediately and we'll do our best to attend as quickly as possible.
